Booted Eagle
Booted Eagle
Aquila pennata
The Booted Eagle is a medium-sized bird of prey with a wingspan of long, narrow wings and feathered tarsi. It is distinguished by two main plumages: a light one, with almost white underparts and a greyish tail and a dark one, with predominantly brownish tones. There is also an intermediate phase, reddish or brownish. On the uppers the plumage is uniform, with golden and brownish feathers. Juveniles have pale-edged wing coverts and a more striped breast than adults. In flight, a pale edge stands out on the wings and tail. It is mainly found in forest areas.
During display flights, these birds circle above the forest, descending steeply towards the treetops before rising again above open areas, often calling.
