Corn Bunting

Emberiza calandra

The Corn Bunting is a medium-sized bird (approx. 18 cm), of robust appearance, with earthy plumage and numerous whitish stripes that give it an appearance similar to that of larks, although it is distinguished by its large beak adapted to a grain-eating diet and a characteristic white moustache with dark edges. Common in open and agricultural areas, its metallic and repetitive song is frequent in spring.

The beak of the Corn Bunting has a small, very characteristic “tooth” or sharp edge in the middle of the upper jaw. It is used to crack grains and seeds.
