Short-toed Snake Eagle
Short-toed Snake Eagle
Circaetus gallicus
The Short-toed Eagle is a bird of prey with a wingspan of 166–188 cm (65–74 in). Males, slightly smaller than females, have a shorter bib and paler brown mottling. The contrast between the brown back and the white underparts with dark bars is striking. Its wings are long and broad, with a straight, banded tail, and its broad head has a dark hood that extends to the chest. The eyes, with yellow irises, are more pronouncedly frontally set than in other diurnal birds of prey.
The short-toed eagle is notable for its long flight, using its wide wings and tail to glide and hover in the air while searching for prey on the ground.
