The Nuthatch is a small, stocky bird that is easily identified by its agile and distinctive way of climbing and moving both up and down tree trunks, head up and down. Its plumage is blue-grey on top, with an ochre-coloured belly and breast and a white throat. A black band runs across the head from the beak to the neck. Juveniles are similar to adults but with less bright colours on the body and head.
Creates larders in the cracks of tree trunks with insects and especially nuts.

It feeds mainly on insects, especially caterpillars and beetles. In autumn and winter it supplements its diet with nuts and seeds.
