Black Redstart
Phoenicurus ochruros
The Black Redstart is a small, dark brown or black bird with a red tail. In Spain it is common in the north, especially in mountainous areas. It is associated with rocky outcrops and dry, stony terrain, also occupying human buildings in urban and rural areas. The male has a black chest and face, with the rest of the body dark and a white patch on the wings; females and juveniles are greyish brown. It is a terrestrial bird that perches upright and has a fast, flapping flight.
It is normal to see it making nervous movements with its tail, almost always
close to the ground, since it is not very aerial.
